Crimson Moon Gear Purification: What You Keep
crimson moon gear purification — Direct answer: Gear brought back to Sanctus Clypeus is purified automatically and permanently unlocks the item at Common quality. The rarity found during a run is temporary; Gajov upgrades the permanent minimum quality, while temporary Boons and other run power disappear when that run ends.
Launch-build gear rules checked September 8, 2026. This page separates permanent Collection progress from power that belongs only to the active run.

How Crimson Moon gear purification works
Purification occurs when eligible gear reaches Sanctus Clypeus. It covers equipment you are carrying and equipment stored in the stash, including gear brought back after a death. The important result is an item unlock in the permanent Collection, not a permanent copy of the exact rarity found in the mission.
Returning to the hub between missions does not finish the active run. The equipment and upgrades already acquired for that run continue forward, but newly discovered eligible items are still purified when you return.
| Moment | Current run | Permanent result |
|---|---|---|
| Find a Rare item | Use it at Rare quality | No permanent quality change yet |
| Return to Sanctus Clypeus | Keep using it during the active run | The item unlocks at Common quality |
| Upgrade it with Gajov | Use the upgraded minimum quality | Future copies cannot fall below that minimum |
Why Rare gear becomes Common
A Rare, Epic, or other higher-quality drop can be used at that quality during the run in which it appears. When purification adds the item to the Collection, its permanent version starts at Common quality. Seeing Common in the Collection after returning with a Rare item is therefore the intended rule, not proof that the item failed to save.
Think of purification as unlocking the equipment model for future loadouts. It does not copy the temporary quality roll from the current hunt.
What Gajov upgrades permanently
After an item has been purified, Gajov can raise its permanent minimum quality. If the permanent minimum becomes Uncommon, the item starts at Uncommon or better when selected at the Loadout Station, and later copies found as loot cannot fall below that minimum.
Buying a higher-quality item from Gajov gives that quality for the active run and purifies the item immediately, but the permanent unlock still begins at Common until its minimum quality is upgraded.
What persists and what resets
The permanent side includes purified item unlocks and minimum-quality upgrades purchased through Gajov. Innate Boons are fixed parts of their equipment. Temporary Boons gained during a run apply only to that run and do not become permanent properties of the Collection item.
A new run begins with a new loadout and zero Souls. During an active run you can find, equip, and swap gear, but the Loadout Station stays unavailable until the run is completed or ends in death.
- Permanent: purified equipment unlocks
- Permanent: Gajov minimum-quality upgrades
- Item-based: innate Boons
- Run-only: temporary Boons and current-run power
Success, death, and the between-mission hub
A standard run moves through three missions and then a World Boss. Returning to Sanctus Clypeus after mission one or two is only an intermission: the same run is still active, so the current equipment continues and the Loadout Station remains locked.
Running out of lives ends the run. Purification still applies to eligible gear brought back to the hub, while temporary run power ends. This distinction explains why an item can be permanently present in the Collection even though its higher in-run rarity and temporary Boons are gone.
Intended behavior versus a bug
Two commonly confusing results are intentional: a purified high-rarity item appearing as Common, and the Loadout Station remaining unavailable between missions. The current official issue list separately acknowledges that the interaction area around dropped loot can be larger than intended; that UI problem should not be confused with the purification rule.
Use the Collection and the item’s permanent minimum quality to judge whether progression saved. Do not use the temporary rarity from the previous mission as the expected permanent value.
